Standard Eight: Assessment of Student Learning:
The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner.
Assessment Plan for Animal and Their Habitats
For my formative assessment for the Animals and Their Habitats Unit, I had students write a multi paragraph on their animal and it's habitat. They were given a graphic organizer that included information that they needed to research and then they were given a blank one to fill in. Students worked in partners has they used books and iPads to research. Students then had to write a rough draft and revise and edit it before writing their final. The final paper was their formative assessment for the over all unit because they could include all the information learned throughout our unit in their paper. I created a rubric to assess this paper.
Explorer Report Assessment
During our six week explorer research project, students were given a packet that included information about their explorer to fill in. Students used the internet and books to find their information. After their packet was complete, they were to move on to making a powerpoint that would show the classroom what information they found important to share about their explorer. I used this as a formative assessment because it would cover the important facts that they and to pick out. There were certain guidelines they had to follow, which included: 5 or more slides, the explorers name, and important facts about this explorer. The students loved creation power points and did a fabulous job at it. I was very proud of them!
Multiplication Exit Ticket
After a lot of my lessons, I like to check for understanding with my students to help guide me for my next lessons. Sometimes students take longer to grasp a concept and need extra review on it and sometimes then tend grasp concepts really fast and are ready to move onto the next concept. Exit Tickets are a great way for me to check understanding with my students as an informal assessment. It's easy for them to either just tell me the answer as they head to lunch or to actually complete a problem on paper. I use exit tickets almost daily with all subjects. With this exit ticket, I was checking for students understanding with the traditional algorithm for multiplication. Students seemed to struggle with this strategy so we spent a few extra days with this before moving on. I gave students different questions so that not all were the same.
